Yoshiyuki had suffered from illness several times, but he never lost his enthusiasm for writing. He published a full-length novel Suna no Ue no Shokubutsugun (The Plant in the Sand), which was his best known book and others such as Anshitsu (The Dark Room), Otoko to Onnanoko (A Man and a Girl), the very artistic work, Honō no naka (In the Fire), Deguchi/Haikyo no Nagame (The Way Out/A View of the Ruins), and a short story Kaban no Nakami (In the Bag). He also wrote some entertaining stories like Nezumi Kozō Jirokichi, (Jirokichi, theThief) and Suresure (The Thin Line). Shūsaku Endō, Shōtarō Yasuoka, Shumon Miura, Keitarō Kondō were known as the “Third Generation.” He had a lot of fans because of his humorous essay Keihaku no Susume (Encouragement of Fribbles). He also wrote weekly interview columns for a magazine over the long period of time and was known as “a master of conversation.” Yoshiyuki died of a liver cancer at St. Luke’s International Hospital on July 26, 1994.
