Mushanokoji was fondly known among his colleagues as &#8220;Musha&#8221;. He was awarded with the Order of Culture in 1951. He was also a  honorary citizen of Tokyo. Mushanokoji wrote his first novel, Koya (&#8220;Wilderness&#8221;) at the age of 23 and wrote more than 6,000 of novels, dramas, poems and essays over his life. He was also a painter known for his uniquely simple but delicate style.
